New custody data released

In collaboration with OJJDP, NCJJ has released a new publication series of 1-page dashboards to highlight key data trends for national data collections.  Each one-page Snapshot focuses on a specific topic (e.g., juveniles in residential placement) and highlights policy-relevant findings. The first Data Snapshot focuses on the continued decline in the youth residential placement population using data collected by OJJDP's Census of Juveniles in Residential Placement (CJRP).

In addition to the new publication, OJJDP has released state-comparison data for the most recent CJRP that can be explored by race, placement status and facility type in the CJRP data Easy Access data tool. While somewhat misleading, the print media and reform advocacy community often use the CJRP state comparisons to write about incarceration rates among the states and to develop state rankings.  However, many youth included in the CJRP counts reside in non-secure settings for substitute care, including campus-style or small group home residential facilities (in contrast to prison-like, high security settings in juvenile justice).
