Summary

In South Dakota, the Department of Social Services (DSS) administers child welfare services, the  Juvenile Division of the Department of Corrections (DOC) administers juvenile commitment and juvenile probation field services are operated in seven regions by the South Dakota Unified State Court System. 

The state agencies consulted with national experts at Robert F. Kennedy Children's Action Corp to develop a formal record sharing agreement between DSS and DOC. The focus of the agreement is between child protection services and corrections and is supported with a formal case coordination protocol recorded in a memorandum of understanding (MOU). The MOU addresses the criteria for considering a DOC commitment for a dual status youth, joint planning procedures, cost sharing protocols and agreed upon principles for collaboration.
